War between Bayern and Tira is finally over. To cement the peace with their old sworn enemies, a group from each kingdom will cross to the other for a 'season of friendship'. At first all is well, but mysterious events in the Tiran capital arouse suspicions and anger bubbles just beneath the surface. Enna's friend Razo must find out who is masterminding these events before it's too late and they find themselves trapped in the heart of Tira as war breaks out.

Rejoice! Razo finally gets his own book!
Those who have already read "The Goose Girl" and "Enna Burning" will be familiar with Razo, the sweet but sometimes dense shepherd boy who became a member of the guard and saved Enna from being consumed by the fire. I really don't recommend picking this up without having read at least "Enna Burning" first, because it follows almost straight on from that book and frequently refers to it.
Now the war between Bayern and Tira is over, Geric wants to to establish better relations. Enna, Razo and Finn become part of the peace mission, but Razo is pretty sure that he's only been invited along because he's a member of Bayern's Own, not because he's especially talented at anything. But then burned bodies start turning up and the Bayerns must find out who's murdering them before the Tirans discover that Enna is the firewitch. And Razo finds out that he's not as useless as he thought he was.
Razo is an endearing narrator, possibly the most appealing out of the three narrators from this world. He is funny, humble and often shrewd (though he doesn't realise it). His journey of self-discovery, combined with his tentative detective work, make this book one of my favourite fantasy tales.
Stunning...a great way to end the triology
River Secrets is the final book in Shannon Hale's triology, the first two being the award winning novels 'The Goose Girl' and 'Enna Burning'. You can never be disappointed with Hale's writing, and this is no exception. She is the true master of description, and, because of these details, her books allow you to build a very real and solid world and a true, personal understanding of the characters. I think to get the full 'oomph' from the book you will have needed to read the previous two before this one.
The story is centred around Razo, a poor forest boy who is chosen to go on Bayern's peace mission to their rival country, Tira. The mission is throttled with danger and Razo must keep a an eye out for anybody who does not seem quite right. And with the discovery of two burnt and blackened bodies Razo must find who is the culprit before he strikes again...
Please do not overlook this book; if you do then you will be missing out on Shannon Hale at her best!
I didn't think she could write a third book as good as the first two, but here's proof she can!
This book is brilliant. You can still enjoy it without having read The Goose Girl and Enna Burning, but if you have read them you will recognise the characters, and they are both very good books.
After the war between Bayern and neighbouring Tira finishes, the two kingdoms send an ambassador into each other's cities, and Razo is shocked to discover that he is among the Bayern ambassador's guard. However, things don't stay peachy for very long, what with suspicious neighbours and strange events that look like someone is trying to frame the Bayern.
