Product Description

SOUL OF THE FIRE saw the political machinations that have dogged the midlands reach new heights as the Chimes ran free and threatened magic everywhere. As the novel ended Kahlan has narrowly avoided death and now she and Richard Rahl, the Seeker, must strive again to save the world from the resurgent armies of the Emperor Jagang. From the very first page FAITH OF THE FALLEN PITCHES Richard and Kahlan into their most desperate fight yet, a fight where worlds once again hang in the balance. Richard must embark on a course of action that will leave his people feeling betrayed and vulnerable and which will take both he and Kahlan away from the protection of the DHaran armies. But he has no choice; Richard, who distrusts prophecy more than anyone, has had a vision. It is a vision he is compelled to follow.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
In the sixth volume Faith of the Fallen of Terry Goodkind's "Sword of Truth" series, things have, as usual, gone from bad to worse. Richard Rahl, understanding that the sanctimonious Imperial Order of Jagang is too vast for him to defeat by military might, has retreated into the wilderness to think things through, and to allow his beloved Kahlan to heal from nearly fatal injuries, and left his supporters to fight for their own freedom. Part of the point of Goodkind's series has been that people need to work out their own salvation ; Jagang, with his creed of universal mutual support and habit of committing atrocity to bring it closer, is just as sincere a messiah, after all, as Richard. And then Richard is kidnapped by Nicci, a Sister of Darkness, who has Kahlan magically hostage and is determined to persuade him that Jagang is right by taking him to the heart of the Empire and showing him how it works. Goodkind's tic of aphorism, and some laboured Libertarian satire on the welfare state, do not prevent this being an effective continuation of this popular series. Battles, revolts and the creation of art are things Goodkind does well--and there are plenty of them here. --Roz Kaveney

A worthy addition to the series4
I must admit, I was a little disappointed with 'Soul of the Fire,' and thought perhaps that the series was waning. Not so. 'Faith of the Fallen' returns with the distinctive imaginative flair that has become Goodkind's trademark.

This installment in the series sees Richard captured and separated from Kahlan and dragged into the very heart of the Old World. Meanwhile, Kahlan holds the D'Haran armies together as they fight a hopeless battle against the advancing hordes of the Imperial Order.

The writing and story leans away from the increasing 'touchie-feelie' nature of the previous books, a change which I personally found heartening; Richard and Kahlan's near constant professions of love were beginning to detract from the quality of the story. Goodkind's personal political beliefs seem to play a part in the depiction of the Imperial Order's homeland, heavily communist as it is. In my opinion, however, this only strengthens the quality of the book, painting a more believable picture of a foe that previously had remained a largely unknown quantity.

Why not five stars? It's not the sweeping type of epic fantasy found in 'Wizards First Rule,' 'The Stone of Tears' or 'Temple of the Winds.' Some of the material seems a little re-hashed (Kahlan leading an outmatched army against the Order? That seems familiar...), and nothing really new appears.

But it's still excellent. The writing style remains fluid, the new and existing characters are still believable and deep, and the series looks to be back on form. Looking forward to the seventh!

Great book!5
This is one of the best books I have ever read. I cried, I laughed, I rejoiced, I felt scared, I felt angry, I felt triumph. When reading this and other books by Terry Goodkind you feel! Its like you are really there and the book is very realistic and well written!

abosoultly brilliant!!!!5
this book is one of the best books i have ever read! i think this is because of how strong that terry goodkind makes richard. Richard is a character who makes you want to read more, with his unpredictability and powerful characteristics. the on going story which began at "wizards first rule" is extreemly good and full of mystery as richard finds out more about his power and the troubles between kahlan and the witch shota. It is remarkable how terry goodkind is able to keep richard as interesting as he is through all these books, and the adventures that he has. Zedd the wizard is also one of my favourite characters, because of his humour and respect he is given by all the characters. The best part of most the characters is their ability to change their character. Zedd can appear nothing more than an old man but he can also be the legendary first wizard. Kahlan on the other hand can somethimes be depressing, as most of the time her love for richard gets in the way. but she is also a powerful character, and the books would not be as good without her. i am really looking forwared to the next book and i would seriously recommend these books to all readers who love fantasy.
