Product Description

A short novel of immense scope that shows Terry Goodkind's story telling powers at their very best. In the days of the war against Panis Rahl a young woman presents the first wizard with an intractable choice and forces him into an encounter that could unleash a maelstrom of magic. Terry Goodkind's skill at showing characters struggling with free will and facing nightmarish dilemmas as their spirits are tested is shown to its best effect in DEBT OF BONES, as is his consummate world building.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Terry Goodkind has always been stronger on visionary description than on explanation: Debt of Bones goes back to a time before the realms of The Sword of Truth were sundered by deadly barriers to explain much of what we have seen. At the same time, it is a moving human story rather than an appendix to larger texts; Abby, the young mother desperate to save her child, is placed in an impossible dilemma, and Goodkind is fascinated by the process whereby she comes to her eventual decision. He also shows us a younger, brasher, fiercer Zedd than the wise old sage we meet in the other novels, a man who has not yet formulated his devastatingly tough-minded instincts into a set of misleading proverbs. This impressive, tightly-driven novella is full of ingenious retro-fitting of information we already know the outcome of; we know that some of the decisions taken here will have consequences of which the characters cannot imagine and we find ourselves all the more torn by their dilemmas because of it. Anyone who has been moved and delighted by Goodkind's sequence cannot avoid reading this book, not just for its explanations but for its ruthless yet loving portrait of a group of flawed human beings trying to do the closest thing possible to the right thing. --Roz Kaveney

Way way to short.1
...This should never have been published like this. As a fan of Terry I feel short changed and I didn't even pay for it.. (Gift from my GF) I am used to getting a good book thats worth reading....

I must say thou that this is a good story, the characters are drawn with all of Terry's usual skill and style, the story flows very nicely and it is well told. However when I put the book down I felt cheated/robbed because I wanted so much more from this book and didn't get it.

As has been said by another reviewer this would have made a great main peice in a collection of short stories... I feel I must come back to the fact that I am used to getting a great big wedge of a book from Terry and this was just a sliver. I am not saying I want quantity over quality... I just want what Terry has given us before which is quality AND quantity.

This is a must read for any fan of Terry's work, but wait till it comes out in paperback or you see it in a sale... or even second hand. The less you pay for it the less you will feel ripped off.

Shame I've already got it in a volume of short stories!1
It would have been nice to have found out that this was exactly the same as the short story published in Legends (1998). I've now got two copies of the same story and while it's ok it certainly wasn't worth paying for twice!...

Good but a bit short.4
A very good short story. It's nice to see Zedd as the centre of the action. Only problem is that it's too short,I wanted it to go on and find out what happened afterwards! Worth a read if you have been following the series. But beware this has already appeared in the Legends anthology!!
