Neil McGraw's childhood is unusual. The son of a dour Scottish undertaker, he regularly finds himself locked among the coffins in the basement. No wonder he becomes obsessed with the question of questions: What happens when you die? Turning is back on the Scottish way of life, Neil sets off to find the answer. But when his father dies, Neil comes home with his Indian wife Lila to turn the family business into something altogether different. They start by changing the company motto from Rest Assured to Way to Go ...

Customer Reviews

Rest assured this is a good read.5
The best book dealing with death and its effects on our lives since Ray Bradbury's childrens book 'The Halloween Tree'. Much funnier though, with an average of one incident of gallows humour every page. Seriously, It's Dead funny.

Stick with it and you'll be hooked.4
I struggled a bit with the first few pages of this book, but quickly got drawn into it's style and humour. As well as being an fascinating story of funeral folk it also questions the nature of death and the rituals that surround it. Alan Spence seems to be getting a great deal off his chest in this novel but only occasionally does that become obvious or intrusive. Very funny and ultimately very moving too.

A look at the subtle humor in the akwardness of death.5
This novel directly confronts the idea of death and the ways it can be looked at, including a spiritual realm and as a money maker. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and cannot wait to read another Spence novel.
