A good read, but some bloopers4
An easy read that covers some significant parts of Scotland's history, particularly it's early Christianising. The best bits are the tales retold of the ancient people and events. I was worried that the mystic Scotland bit was overplayed, but I resolved nicely at the end. If you want a good summer read that will uplift and intrigue, then stop this review here. The next bit is a Scot nit-picking!

I wish Michael had taken some time to talk with a Scot before he submitted his final manuscript. There are so many silly errors. A main protagonist, a Highlander, speaks throughout as a Lowlander ( a bit like confusing the speech of someone from New York and Alabama). Glasgow is not a seaport (it is inland). There is only one loch near Dumbarton, not two (or was he confusing the Firth of Clyde as a sea-loch?) Lots and lots of these easy-to-correct errors.

But, don't let them stop you reading the book. It was a good read over my summer hols.

As an American with virtually no knowledge of Scottish history, I was spell bound by this book. My parents, who love Scotland and visit it frequently, gave it to me with the highest recommendation. It reminded me of Michener, with the same sweeping approach to the ages. I can't wait for the next in the series!
