Mr Humperdinck's Wonderful Whatsit
Many of us believed in fairies when we were young. They were small people with butterfly-like wings. After reading the book I surely think differently about fairies and I look at bricks and garbage through different eyes.
Louw created a wonderful fantacy world that is so part of our normal day-to-day world and described in so much detail that it can almost be true. In this fantacy and real world Pete and his friend go on an adventure to save the good from tytanny and from the bad. The book is beautiful written and the tension almost becomes unbearable before the plot starts to unravel in a logic way.
There is however musch more to the story that just adventure, villians and heroes - It also mocks a little with our social order and has a deep message. A message that we can all remember and teach to our children. "If no-one believes in a human, he eventually stops believing in himself. And then he starts to die - slowly from the inside."
It is a wonderful story and the perfect gift for your children and friends. Hopefully there will be a followup. I would like to know what happens to Pete and his friends.
