Customer Reviews

just read it for its beauty.4
I do not generally read stories by unfamiliar writers. But those illustrations told me to read. And my! what a lovable story. It'll make you think and laugh and smile and feel sad.
It starts with a boy who lived "when there was electric light but no television" and who grows into a ordinary man with a passion for collecting catfood 'labels'.This love which is for him greater than anything else in the world, which turns into an obsession and... A delightful human character presented with equally good prose.

A lovely, if very short, book5
At only about 30 pages of text and about 30 wonderful illustrations it's not brilliant value [...] but it's marvellous.
de Bernieres book is a tale of a man who collects the labels from tins of cat food. Not a marvellous premise although anyone who has read his previous books will understand how his captivating style can enrapture and delight.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough although I do think it is a little pricy.

Eccentric and Sweet - pure Louis de Bernieres5
This very short story is both eccentric and sweet and is pure Louis de Bernieres. Based around a young man who finds himself drawn towards collecting cat food labels out of boredom, he then finds it escalating into an obsession as he reaches adulthood. He cannot draw himself away from collecting these labels regardless of the effect it has on his wallet, his relationships and his life. Beautifully told and beautifully illustrated. A joy.
