About the Author
Joyce Cary was born into a distinguished Anglo-Irish family in Londonderry and educated at Clifton. He studied art in Paris before reading law at Oxford. After serving in the Balkan War of 1912-13 he joined the Nigerian Political Service .His time in Africa provided the inspiration for his first four novels. Though he settled in Oxford as a fulltime writer in 1920 it was not until 1932 that his first book was published. At the time of his death in 1957 he was recognised as one of the leading novelists in the world. Cary often dealt with complex issues of good and evil and his writing cannot be easily pigeonholed. However he was first and foremost a novelist of character and his plots are always highly satisfying.
