Life isn't exactly normal lodging at the Pennykettles - not when you're surrounded by hundreds of clay pottery dragons. Fate seems to be dictating an unusual course for David when his university tutor sets him a writing project on the existence - or not - of dragons. The tantalizing prize - a fully-funded research trip to the Arctic - seems just within his grasp. David starts to research the subject and soon discovers a connection between dragons and the Arctic just as it begins to snow. Is it only a coincidence? Or could deeper forces be at work? As David starts to uncover more about the dragons, he finds himself drawn down a path from which there is no going back to a time when dragons really did exist, and their secrets were guarded by the polar bears of the Arctic. If David is going to have any chance of winning the research trip, he has to open his mind to the legend of dragons and the mysterious secret of Icefire.

"Fly, Cherokee Fly/Highly Commended for the Carnegie Medal. "A brilliant story, quirky and well-written. An intelligent, sensitive and magical book that cleverly succeeds in combining fun with the ability to make you think." The Bookseller on The Fire Within

Dragontastic!!
Move over Harry Potter the Dragons are here!
This is a brilliant book, I couldn't put it down for 5 hours. It is the continuing adventure of David Rain from Chris d'Laceys previous book "The Fire Within". It filled with excitement, adventure and continuous twists in the tale. Davids landlady ,Liz, is a potter who makes dragons, but these dragons are special, they have minds of their own, literally. It is a unique fastasy story with characters that feel you know as your friends by the end of the book. It is a book that can be enjoyed by both adults and children, as my mom discovered!!
Just what I expected: wonderful book!
Just like the last book, the fire within, icefire is a great book! I love all the action in it! So many things are happening at once, but in the end they all fit together. I recommend this book to everyone! hrrr! The dragons like it! Can't wait for the next one! I'm ready for it, but still reading the first two books over and over!
hrrr!
A more grown up tale
I have read both "The Fire Within" and "Icefire" to my daughter, now 8, and we both really enjoyed both books. I found Icefire to have jumped up a level in the scariness factor from the Fire Within, which is suitable for younger readers. I wouldn't reccomend Icefire to all children of 8 - if they are prone to nightmares, reading the later sections of the book as a bedtime story may not be such a good idea!
My daughter and I wish we could somehow get our own Pennykettle dragon - but are quite happy not to have Gwillanna anywhere in our world. She is one scary lady.
Looking forward with glee to reading Firestar, the next book in the series, to my girl.
