At last; Doctor Who meets Dracula!
Big Finish recently released their one hundredth original audio Doctor Who adventure, `100'. Son of the Dragon is a better starting point if you're new to the range, as it typifies why the audio dramas (and their parent TV show) have proved such a great success over the years.
Steve Lyons has written a bold and gripping gothic tale based on the popular tale of the father of all vampires - Count Dracula. In this version Dracula (or Prince Vlad III) is portrayed by James Purefoy as a misunderstood warrior defending his kingdom rather than a bloodsucking ghoul; hounded on all sides by others wishing to claim his scalp, and his power. Into this arena comes The Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison, for the uninitiated) along with his young female companions, Peri Brown, a feisty American botanist and Erimem, deposed Egyptian Pharaoh. The travellers are swiftly caught up in the madness of war against the Turkish invaders; the Prince becomes infatuated with Erimem and The Doctor has to be at his very best to keep ahead of a labyrinthine chain of events.
This is one of the best of the series so far; Peri has a far meatier role than in previous stories and her rapport with The Doctor is great. Caroline Morris as Erimem is somewhat sidelined but still acquits herself well whilst Davison himself continues to develop in the role without the restrictions of a television studio. There is little of the histrionic acting that seemed to run through other audios in the range like malignant writing in a particularly camp stick of rock and the supporting cast are all on top form.
If this is an indicator of where the series is heading on audio then the next one hundred releases are going to be a treat.
the bride of dracula
another audio adventure for the fifth doctor who, with his companions peri and erimem [the latter having been created especially for the audio range]. A story told in four twenty five minute long episodes takes them to medieval eastern europe, at a time of great war and strife. Vlad the impaler, the man also known as dracula and inspiration for much vampire legend, is fighting for his kingdom. And as usually happens in this situation, the doctor and his friends get caught up in the middle.
This is purely historical story with no science fiction or alien elements, and it's a very quality drama. It considers many moral issues of duty and leadership, and the play is dominated by a superb performance from james purefoy as vlad, presenting as a leader who has a decent heart but will never compromise. Peter Davison's doctor suits this story well, with a superbly detached attitude to the goings on, and his two companions get their moments to shine. Some humorous moments from peri via her reaction to things work well.
This is quality drama, the best big finish release of the year, and well worth getting.
And the usual extras at the end of each discs have something more than interviews for once, as they give us a couple of deleted scenes. which are quite interesting
HISTORY DOESNT SUCK......
This is a great audio from start to finish, with excellent performances, this is another of the history who's that are by far better than the monster fests of many other audios. this is in the same vein as No Mans land and The Settling. A great adventure into historical Transylvania. We come face to face with a believable Dracula, or rather Vlad the Impaler. This adventure seems very well thought out and very well written. A constant and tense and exciting adventure to say the least. Peter Davison is on fine form too. and Caroline Morris again excels as the brilliant Erimem. This story also has real genuine twists and surprises round every corner. This is by far one of the best audio adventures in the universe. Thoroughly enjoyable stuff!
