Keep your eye on the prize
This is a warning to all space-farers. You must keep away from this planet. It's hostile, repeat, hostile..." On a planet with no name, the Doctor finds himself confronted by a faulty memory and some killer plants. Meanwhile, in a distant galaxy, Erimem leads a troubled empire. Back on Earth, Peri tells her son about the good old days when she used to travel with a guy called the Doctor...
In this illusory adventure, The Doctor's Egyptian companion Erimem seems to be in charge of an alien planet, whilst the third member of the TARDIS crew, Peri, is back on Earth with a family, but how can this be possible when she's still with The Time Lord?
Writer Colin Brake has written a fast paced and engaging story that successfully avoids becoming bogged down in continuity but which poses a series of riddles before answering them cleverly and in style.
The guest cast, including Welsh baritone Owen Teale all take on multiple roles spread across the real and imaginary worlds. Even Nicola Bryant (Peri) has a go, doubling up as the aliens in this release's bonus single-part adventure `Mission of the Viyrans'.
A brilliant feel of the classic days.....
Big Finish dont half know how to recreate the feel of the classic who series whilst at the same time bringing new and fresh ideas into the mix. And The Mind's Eye is no exception. Where at first hostile alien plants may well have been done quite a few times before, it hasnt been done like this!
The Doctor and Peri and Erimem land on an unnamed planet where the plants are very unusual and very deadly. At first when i first heard this story i really thought that the two companions had left the Doctor on his own. But I was wrong. They have been forced into living a dream by the telepathic plants.
Peter Davison and Nicola Bryant and Carloine Morris lead a great cast in a story that really does have a feel of the old series about it. This story is great!
And Mission Of The Viyrans is a brilliant bonus by Nick Briggs. At first listen i wondered what the hell is all this about. Please hurry up and explain what the hell is going on.But on a second and more concerntrated listen i really got the jist of this excellent one part story. I cant wait for a whole viyran story, are we going to get any in the near future?
I am really enjoying the great stories that Big Finish have produced over the last eight years. In my view they are some of the best stories ever, yes, even over the new series on TV. There have been very few stories that have been boring, the worst for me being half and half in terms of coolness, but that aint bad in a list of over a 100 is it? I dont think so.
I would definitely recommend this new audio story for anyone who likes the old doctor who or the new. The Mind's Eye is a brilliant piece of work.
mind how you go
Another audio adventure for the fifth doctor who, with his companions peri and erimem. This is a three part story, each episode running twenty five minutes in length.
The tardis lands on an alien world, with some strange plant life. and a close encounter with this leaves the doctor dazed and in the custody of a military and scientific expedition, and peri and erimem in completely different worlds of their own.
But there's a lot more going on here than meets the eye. and are any of these worlds safe for the tardis crew?
An excellent little story. nothing special plotting wise but being three rather than four parts means it's paced very well and it rattles along at quite a good rate as a result. the regulars are helped by a good guest cast who manage to make characters that could have been cliched quite believable. there are several surprising twists in part three and a final scene that really packs a strong emotional punch, making it very memorable.
the fourth episode on the disc, mission of the viryans, is set after the upcoming audio story bride of peladon. and it gives some hints as to that one having a memorably ending, so you may want to wait on listening to this until after then. this is a one part story that introduces a new alien race who are out to kill the doctor. their reasons for this are quite original, and the episode itself is well done, as they and peri struggle to disover the truth about a strange event. there's a surprising final twist so don't turn the cd player off till the very end of the final track.
as usual both discs contain up to twenty minutes of interviews with the cast of the story. these can be a bit repetitive, but there are good moments in the interviews here and they are worth a listen
