When twenty-six year old George Mullen is kicked out by his lover, Robert, he moves into the terminally disordered apartment of Nina Borowski, and embarks on the most complicated friendship of his life. At first their relationship is as easy as their cosy television suppers and ballroom dancing classes, with Nina mulling over her psychology dissertation and George teaching kindergarten. Then Nina announces she's pregnant by her boyfriend, Howard. Howard wants marriage. Nina wants independence. And George will do almost anything for a little unqualified affection. But he's not so sure about his new role as surrogate unwed father...

Customer Reviews
A book everyone can relate to!
I read this book on a whim. The bookstore that I work at got the movie tie-in version in, and I decided to buy it. I read it in about 2 days, and immediately recommended it to all of my friends. My best friend and I always tell people that if I was gay, she was pregnant, we were ten years older, and we lived together, it would be our lives (but i'm not, she's not, we aren't and we don't). Regardless, I love this book because it the sexaul orientation of the charachters doesn't matter; it could be any two people who are really close. Friendship is a lot more complext than love.
Maybe the best last line I ever read.
If you love life, cherish friendships and believe in happiness, read this book, which is, in part, a wonderful tale about the process of learning to accept the responsibility you bear for seeking happiness in your world. No part of the book disappointed, and the last few pages are something truly special, as McCauley shows he's got the gift of being able to see inside the soul: he writes the truth, and you know it. I've read no better book since it came out.
Read it before it hits the big screen.
Really enjoyable fiction. McCauley's characters are real...the kind of people you'd like to have in your own life. George is especially sympathetic. The ending is spectacular. McCauley manages to stay true to his characters AND deliver a conclusion that satisfies.
