Too-small scale drama
This novella takes the sudden magnified appearance of Jupiter in the Earths skies as a backdrop to the death of Swedish poet Stina Ekman. There are a number of possible reasons given for Jupiter’s sudden magnification, but the story concentrates upon its human effects rather than on any hard sf invention. Unfortunately the human element itself isn’t particularly striking – Roberts reaches to draw parallels between Jupiter and Stina, but he’s no Ballard, and these connections sometimes seem forced. The novella also makes great play of Ekman being a poet of great talent, and concludes with a lengthy series of poems. I’m no lover of poetry, and these did little for me, seeming repetitious in their content. All in all, an interesting premise, but the story fails to ever move out of first gear.
