A Thoroughly Good Read
This has all the elements a good book needs. Kim, the strong and likeable main character, has to cope with the fact that her husband has been lost in a plane crash and she and her young son have no way of supporting themselves. But this is only the first of the problems she faces, and bravely finds ways of dealing with. The plot is full of surprising developments, making the book very hard to put down. Not only is it exciting, but also very funny. Susie Vereker has a real talent for characterisation, and Beverley Jane the American therapist is a particular joy. The terrible novel the heroine is called upon to edit had me laughing out loud on the bus. The relationships portrayed in the book, both romantic and otherwise, are those of mature adults, with realistic issues. It's a satisfactory novel in every way, and I highly recommend it as a Good Read.
A Cracking Good Read!
It usually takes me a week to read a book...i had this one pegged in 2 days! I just couldnt put it down!
This definitely is an old fashioned arrangement, but, i know many women (housewives and mothers)slightly younger than our heroine, who would be in exactly the same position if their husband dissapeared, myself included. Because i could relate so easily to Kim's situation i feel that it added realism to the story, for me.
This book has got everything though.... Romance, intrigue, sex, suspense....Totally unpredictable....i didnt have a clue as to what was going to happen next, and that was the main reason i couldnt put it down!
A cracking good read!
Amusing escapism with a heart
I enjoyed this exciting romp among the expats and diplomatic circles of Geneva. The characters, particularly the more monstrous ones, were well-drawn and vivid. The plot was almost-thrillerish but with a human side that made it appealing. The sections done in the son's voice were authentic, and minor characters such as Maurice were equally well done. A lighthearted book with a positive flavour, some good laughs, and a good escape from the humdrum world of every day.
