An exploration of life and living in post defeat Tokyo. Suzuki uses his usual flair for colour and mise-en-scene depicting the struggle for survival among a group of women after the war.

As with so many Japanese films, it is the environment that drags them down to this level. Showing humanity at its most basic and bestial, the parallels between selling animals and sex are repeatedly made. Indeed, the location is either a market or the bombed out house of the women, hardly fit for animal habitation. The beatings are a punishment for giving sex for free by the way. After all, if you were a diary farmer, would you give milk away for free?

Another amazing Suzuki film.
Suzuki's tale of social depression and decline in US-occupied post-War Japan is yet another Expressionistic masterpiece in his oeuvre. Why someone has felt the need to give this one star is beyond me, perhaps they were watching a different film? Must have been. The film focuses on a group of young women forced by circumstance to prostitute themselves to survive. Although they give financial reasons for the punishment they hand out for any of the girls who dares not charge for sex because they are in love - its bad for business - it is primarily out of frustration of their situation and jealousy of those who are not as unhappy as they are. Again, Suzuki's use of colour and scenary is spellbinding. Brilliant.

The worst film I have ever seen
The worst film I have ever seen with no redeeming features whatsoever unless you like to watch women being tortured and cow butchery. Its a pretty boring and depressing exploitation film with a dodgy idealogy and no laughs. Would not recommend this to anyone.
