Amazon.co.uk Review
One of Ridley Scott's most wrong-headed films, this one (like all of his movies) looks fabulous and sounds utterly ridiculous, almost from the beginning. His first mistake was casting the wonderful Gerard Dépardieu as Columbus and forcing him to speak English, which Dépardieu does with decided difficulty. After spending far too much time on the ocean with Columbus' three ships (you wish they would sail over the edge of the world), they arrive in the West Indies, only to turn around and sail back. The rest of the film deals with the not particularly comprehensible politics of Columbus' venture, which leads to the violent slaughter of trusting natives by a band of cardboard villains. Dépardieu, who radiates sympathy, looks as if he's at sea with this material. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

a superb Ridley Scott movie!
1492, is stunning with it's images and it's soundtrack. It's honestly a really big triumph in the cinema. Ridley Scott directed 1492, and the movie is highly intelligent with it's direction. Great performances, though the accents are annoying. Besides the accents, everything is perfect in 1492, including Gerard Depardieu's amazing portrayal of Columbus. Be prepared for quite a historical masterpiece. Which 1492 truly is.
A real dark horse ! :-)
This was one film I inherited from my brother when he gave me his video collection. For months it sat gathering dust until I finally got bored and decided to watch it. How gutted I was I didn't view it earlier!
1492 is one of those very rare films where you can really feel the sheer heart and passion that the lead actor has poured into his role. Gerard Depideau is frankly superb and you instantly feel that he really is Columbus and he really did cross that massive ocean.
What's really interesting about this movie though is how it concentrates on not only the events leading up to the discovery but also the aftermath which is so often overlooked. Most people could tell you that Columbus was the guy who discovered America, but not much else about him. This film tells you about the hassles beforehand and his unfortunate struggle thereafter.
A truely moving and educational film. This is worthy of anyones collection.
A visual & audio masterpiece!
Upon viewing 1492 you probably will notice how great this movie looks. It most certainly does look great. Everything about it works quite well.
The visuals, the music, the acting and Depardieu's engaging performance of Columbus are some of the highlights of the film. This DVD has an average transfer though, for a movie that deserves so much better picture wise. 1492 is recommended!
