CD Description
Accompanied as usual by trusty husband/producer T-Bone Burnett, Sam Phillips continues her streak of intelligent, complex pop albums that are simultaneously intriguing and accessible. In contrast to the rococo tapestries of MARTINIS AND BIKINIS and DON'T WORRY LAMBCHOP, FAN DANCE keeps things decidedly spare. While Phillips employs her trademark melodic gift in the service of songs that betray a strong hint of John Lennon influence, there's a moody, creepy quality to many ofthe tunes here that lends a strong film noir flavour. DavidLynch would likely find many choice items here suitable forhis next surreal cinematic effort. Helping to keep it creepy is guitarist extraordinaire Marc Ribot, who provides a great deal of the aforementioned atmosphere. Still, with the arrangements being as scaled down as they are, the songs are front and centre, and darkly catchy little gems they are, as strong as anything Phillips has come up with to date.
Customer Reviews
this is a definite must buy!
If you're not interested in chart dross and would like to listen to some mature music that isn't an aor beasty then i thouroughly recommend this album. This is like the good old days of albums...when there was a mood created and a variety to the songs - unlike now where there are a series of singles and variations on a blander theme. There's a strange mix of music hall, folk, grunge and whimsy in the tracks but they have been recorded very intimately and the music really breathes. My personal favourite is Five Colours...I've had this album for 6 months and still adore this song. Sam is a cruelly underrated/ignored vocalist and songwriter. If you like something slightly off the beaten track you should check it out.
BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!
Yes I know I've written a review for this album before but another year on I still love it! It is an album I've played to friends who have adored it too. Everyone has agreed on the great songs and Sam's great voice - try it out. It is an album that will really grow on you if you give it some time and patience.
