Synopsis
A surreal, absurd mix of politics, sex, fantasty, black comedy and brutality that has been widely hailed as one of the decade's most exhilerating cinematic efforts. During World War II, a pair of friends in the Serb resistance hide in an intricate cellar. Years later, the war is over but the lies and deceptions continue. Winner of the award for Best Film at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival.
Customer Reviews
One of the Greatest Films
One of the greatest film I've seem; worth seeing for the imagery alone.
Cinematography is top notch and the music infectous. Fine acting and the story is, well I'll say nothing and not potentially spoil it for anyone.
If you haven't seen any of the director's work before, try watching some of Kusturica's lighter films, like "black cat white cat" first, before seeing this far darker masterpiece.
Jugoslavia - the bride in Red
I FIND "Underground" the most symbolic movie made by an Eastern European director ever. Long, long time after the film finished I was wondering when, why and how Kusturitza chose to use his most incredibly funny scenario to picture ALL THE DEMONS of the old communist Jugoslavia and Eastern Europe??? Several shots from this movie are still the unique documents of the time, showing Margaret Tatcher, Leonid Brejnev, Nikolae Chaushesku, Cadaffi , Jimmy Carter, etc. So, not surprisingly the lady in the red dress had to make her choice, so did she...
One of the best films ever
An unbelievable story shown with lyricism, humor, emotion, and super music!!
I loved the story, I loved the actors, I loved the direction, the fotography, and would recomend the soundtrack as well. My boyfriend who thought he didn't like not-english-speaking films, loved it, too. A good example that European cinema is not only for "culture freaks".
