Synopsis
In the remote jungle of a Central American country, an elite group of commandos led by Major Dutch Schaeffer (Arnold Schwarzenegger), embarks on a CIA mission to clear out a guerrilla stronghold and rescue the remaining hostages. However, the hunters become the hunted when a highly intelligent, otherwordly being slowly and methodically starts killing off members of Dutch's team. Possessing a chameleonlike camouflaging ability and a deadly alien arsenal, the creature tracks down the soldiers one by one. Director John McTiernan's film is a thrilling high-action flick, filled with great one-liners (courtesy of Schwarzenegger, Jesse Ventura, and the rest of the cast) and excellent special effects.

5 star movie, 2 star DVD treatment
The movie is an undisputed classic, and it's still a class piece of action cinema, so why has yet another lousy DVD edition been churned out?

What a sham this re-issue is. There are no new additions to this version, only the exact same features from the Special Edition that came out 5 years ago.

Okay, I thought, the picture (as boasted on the back of the lovely new metal box) will have been fully remastered and cleaned up, at last. Alas, nothing has been done to the quality of the picture. It's still got the same poor contrast, grainyness and dirt as it has when the very first DVD edition was released 10 years ago.

What are Fox playing at?!? The answer is simple, yet another cheap marketing scam to get us to buy the movie all over again.

Unfortunately for me, it worked.

Amazing film but be warned - Metal Box NOT garunteed
Fantastic film, one of the true action classics. Its no wonder that Arni's most memorable one-liners are in this as well as the director who would go onto direct the equally great Die Hard. However, this DVD is far from perfect. It comes with 2 discs, but those of you have the previous releases will find that its exactly the same except the packaging. The extra features are great and the film's transfer is adequate, but its also wildly inconsistent as at times the shots are murkier than VHS while at other times times they just meet DVD standard.

That however is fine, considering there are so many releases of the film, its nice to finally get a 'definitive' edition even though the product could have been less sloppy. With that said though, you are NOT garunteed to get a metal box, which is really the big draw of this version from the rest.

Instead if you are unlucky, you might get a version with a cardboard sleeve and an exceedingly ugly plastic box. It was a real shame and i plan on returning mine ASAP, my Predator 2 has a metal box and i ordered from a different online store, looks better by leaps and bounds and is worth owning regardless of anything.

Update: Amazon contacted me within hours of reporting the issue and the sending pack was very pleasant and importantly paid for. Despite the fact that i enclosed a letter and also on the return form noted that i wanted a metal case, i yet again got a Cardboard/Plastic version. Its cheaper here than other online retailers but youll also be getting MUCH MUCH MUCH less than you bargained for. Avoid

not the edition i was expecting
anyone expecting a steelbook edition of this film will be disapointed,mine arrived today but was just a normal dvd case with a cardboard sleeve, think i'll be returning it :)
