Alfred Burke stars as down-at-heel Inquiry Agent Frank Marker in this critically acclaimed, long-running drama series. Always working the lower end of the spectrum - divorces, missing persons, bankruptcies - the public found a great affinity with Marker and the series was a huge success over its ten-year life span. This set contains all 13 episodes from the 1972/3 series - complete and uncut. The Bankrupt: How is a bankrupt riding around in a Rolls Royce? Girl in Blue: Marker is hired to find a missing daughter. Many a Slip: Can a doctors wife be a potential credit defaulter? Mrs. Podmores Cat: Markers telephone is cut off because of an unpaid bill. The Man who Said Sorry: Who is the stranger that turns up late at Markers office? Horse and Carriage: Its Christmas, but does anyone have goodwill for Marker? A Family Affair: Why was an old mans estate divided between his sons and housekeeper? The Golden Boy: Why has a young scholar disappeared without trace? The Windsor Royal: Who has stolen two bushes of roses from Lawrences Nurseries? Its a Womans Privilege: Why has Mrs. Mortimer paid Marker a visit? Home and Away: Is a football fanatic really playing away with another woman? Egg and Cress Sandwiches: Who has been writing poison pen letters to the churchwarden? The Trouble with Jenny: Why has one of Markers fellow guests tried to gas herself?

Beware the marketplace sellers
This Public Eye box set has only just been released by Network, who are currently selling it exclusively through their website - for £29.99. So beware those who are selling it on the marketplace for lots more. They haven't got anything rare, they're just after a quick profit. I'm sure Amazon will have it for sale when Network eventually decide to release it for general sale.
frank Marker: a real "Windsor Royal" (Public Eye, 1972/73)
Alfred Burke returns in what is perhaps his most memorable role. Though not as consistently high in standard as the 1971 series, there's still quite a lot for diehard fans (Ray Smith as Firbank, even the return of Pauline Delaney as Mrs Mortimer; however there's only one episode featuring the delicious Brenda Cavendish). The series straddles 1972/73 and with some of the cases of economic double dealing and that of a young idealist giving in to disillusion ("The Golden Boy")which Frank has to deal with, one can sense that 3-day weeks and 1970's apathy are just around the corner. All in all Frank seems to be doing OK for himself in this series, what, with Firbank putting in a good word here and there; there's no holes in the shoe and the mac seems a lot less worn and shady (fair enough, he does get his phone cut off in one episode...). Well worth buying, I'd say.
Classic Series
This boxed set is the long awaited continuation of the life and times of Frank Marker, not exactly a Private Eye, but Enquiry Agent, his own prefered job description.
The set contains all episodes from the 1972/73 series, with Marker still based in his office in Eton High Street. Frank Marker is the endearing loner who shuns trappings of luxury, just as well on his megre income, prefering to work alone, giving all his attentions to each case. My favourite images of him are reading up on new subjects whilst cooking his own dinner, a solitary pint in his local, or with police confident Percy Firbank, queuing outside a telephone booth hudding into his moth eaten trademark raincoat. His cases often involve an intrusion into peoples lonliness, and deep seated problems, suspicions, jealousies.. In tackling those, Marker's life takes on a new meaning. In essence, Marker's only life is his work.
This series is more contrasting than previous, but perhaps also at times verging on the trivial. "The Man Who Said Sorry" and "Many A Slip", both superbly acted, contain two of the series most shocking and tragic endings Public Eye ever had. "Mrs. Podmore's Cat" is more humourous, and "Horse and Carriage" is a rare comedy episode, set at Christmas time, the only episode in the shows history ever to do so. A superb comedic role is played here by Tony Melody, badgering Marker to spend Christmas Eve shivering, watching his house, convinced his wife has another man!
The series concludes in typically strong fashion with "The Trouble With Jenny", where Marker is on the trail of a spiteful blackmailer.
Public Eye as a whole was a virtuoso display of acting by Alfered Burke, whose portrayal of Marker evoked sympathy from the viewer, as well as thought provoking drama, often with climaxes open to interpretation. As Marker attempts to unravel mysteries, you, the viewer, will also. Not to be missed.
