Fantasy With a Life of it's Own
Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy - Book 1)Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy - Book 1) by Robin Hobb
Buy new: £6.46 / Used from: £0.01
Fitz isn't the perfect hero, but he tells his story in a wonderful way. He's a bit of a twit, actually, but it's a great tale.
The Dark Caller (Daughter of Storms trilogy)The Dark Caller (Daughter of Storms trilogy) by Louise Cooper
Buy used from: £0.01
This is the second in the series, but I loved it and haven't read the other two so I can't recommend them.
Legends: Discworld, Pern, Song of Ice and Fire, Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, Wheel of TimeLegends: Discworld, Pern, Song of Ice and Fire, Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, Wheel of Time
Buy used from: £0.01
A selection of stories by various Fantasy authors, this is a wonderful introduction to their worlds and writing styles.
The Crystal Cave (Coronet Books)The Crystal Cave (Coronet Books) by Mary Stewart
Buy used from: £0.01
Possibly the best EVER retelling of Merlin, and I've read quite a few. This is his early years.
A Year and a DayA Year and a Day by Monica Furlong
Buy used from: £1.90
The prequel to Wise Child, this is the story of a young Celtic princess who is sent to live with her rather mean godmother for a year and a day, so she can be a Doran and protect her father's kingdom.
Alanna: The First Adventure (Song Of The Lioness 1)Alanna: The First Adventure (Song Of The Lioness 1) by Tamora Pierce
Buy used from: £0.01
I read this after reading the second series set in Tortall, the Immortals quartet, but as it was the first series TP wrote it's a better introduction.
Lady of AvalonLady of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
Buy new: £6.74 / Used from: £0.01
This was the first of Bradley's books that I read, and I prefer it to all the others. It deals with life on Avalon in a time BEFORE Arthur, and seems more realistic for that.
The Lord of the Rings (3 Book Box set)The Lord of the Rings (3 Book Box set) by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: £11.96 / Used from: £11.99
I know, I know...everyone recommends it. I really love this series though, and it's BRILLIANT. Sheer magic.
The Colour of Magic: The First Discworld Novel (A Discworld Novel)The Colour of Magic: The First Discworld Novel (A Discworld Novel) by Terry Pratchett
Buy new: £4.79 / Used from: £0.01
This is the first of a very long series, and I can't list them all or choose the best, so I'll go with the first. REALLY REALLY FUNNY!
Harry Potter Paperback Box Set: Four VolumesHarry Potter Paperback Box Set: Four Volumes by J.K. Rowling
Buy used from: £11.94
Harry Potter. Well, everyone knows what it's about. I liked it, and whatever anyone (even me) says - it's not a work of genius, but it is fun.
Seer and the Sword (Point)Seer and the Sword (Point) by Victoria Hanley
Buy used from: £0.01
An absolutely brilliant story, with a princess, captive prince, magic sword, and crystal ball (but, surprisingly, it's not cheesy)
She (Oxford World's Classics)She (Oxford World's Classics) by H. Rider Haggard
Buy new: £6.29 / Used from: £0.01
A truly enchanting tale, and one of the very few fantasy books NOT about the battle between Good and Evil (in fact, if you listen to She, good and evil don't exist).
