	The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood Buy new: £5.46 / Used from: £0.01 Brilliant example of the winning contemporary novel. Compelling from beginning to end. A must.
	Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier Buy used from: £0.01 A lovely short novel. Quietly written, with emotional simplicity and honesty but with an interesting look at historical context. Great for a long bus journey.
	Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse Buy used from: £4.50 My favourite Hesse story. Escape from Western degeneration and loss of religion.
	Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £0.01 If you're an Atwood fan you simply musn't miss this. Superb manipulation of fact and fiction. Characterisation spellbinding as always, although I preferred The Blind Assassin.
	Wuthering Heights (Penguin Popular Classics) by Emily BrontÃ« Buy new: £2.00 / Used from: £0.01 The greatest book ever written after the Bible. And infinitely more interesting.
	Jane Eyre (Penguin Classics) by Charlotte Bronte Buy used from: £0.01 If you're female and haven't yet encountered Mr Rochester, what can I say ... ?! An absolute classic for Romantic literature, although Wuthering Heights always wins as the Gothic masterpiece.
	The River Girl (Children's poetry) by Wendy Cope Buy used from: £0.01 A very moving poem, written in subtle and comic verse, but hinting at the deep-rooted issues in our society.
	The Complete Chronicles of Narnia (The Chronicles of Narnia) by C. S. Lewis Buy new: £11.99 / Used from: £11.38 No child should reach adolescence without having read this timeless collection (and seen the video, too!).
	Harry Potter Paperback Box Set: Four Volumes by J.K. Rowling Buy used from: £19.99 Fantastic! If you snub Harry Potter as a simple children's book you obviously haven't read it yet. J K Rowling is a genius and has constructed a whole new world, just as Narnia did a generation ago.
	Brideshead Revisited [VHS] [1981] Buy used from: £3.99 Classic. A lifetime of a story, and the TV series is so good you can approach it without having read the book first, although set aside several days to do it!
	La Belle Et La Bete [1946] [DVD] Buy used from: £15.00 Cocteau's most beautiful film; Auric's score sets an out-of-this-world atmosphere and Marais and Day are epic lovers; a magical world. Tissues and chocolates imperative.
	Charlotte Gray by Sebastian Faulks Buy new: £5.59 / Used from: £0.01 Faulkes's best. Emotionally harrowing. A long, slow read - ideal for taking away on holiday to the Lake District and sitting by log fires.
	The Chrysalids (Penguin Modern Classics) by John Wyndham Buy new: £5.73 / Used from: £2.29 I am not a science fiction enthusiast by any means, but John Wyndham's works are wonderful. If you haven't read any start with this: I think it's his most intriguing.
	Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis De Bernieres Buy new: £4.23 / Used from: £0.01 Awful film but an excellent read; admirable historical awareness and structurally very well thought out.
