	The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events No.1) by Lemony Snicket Buy used from: £0.01 Worth reading for the originality alone, plus there's plenty here to amuse adults and children alike. Read all 13.
	The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Volume 1: Charmed Life/The Lives of Christopher Chant by Diana Wynne Jones Buy new: £4.90 / Used from: £0.49 An old 'un but a good 'un. Diana Wynne Jones did wonderful fantasy fiction before it was trendy to do so, and no one does it better even now.
	The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4 by Sue Townsend Buy new: £4.10 / Used from: £1.54 However miserable you may feel as a teenager, you can comfort yourself you're having a better time than Adrian. Wonderfully witty, bears even repeated reading.
	Old Kingdom Trilogy Box Set by Garth Nix Buy used from: £23.99 Dark, gripping and original. The second two books are the strongest.
	Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson Buy new: £3.81 / Used from: £0.01 A fine piece of exotic adventure escapism, just as childrens books should be
	The Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus Trilogy) by Jonathan Stroud Buy new: £5.19 / Used from: £0.01 First in a triology. Utterly gripping adventure stories with three dimensional characters, both humourous and sad.
	The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett Buy new: £4.86 / Used from: £2.00 A quirky satire on the Pied Piper of Hamlin legend, told with typical Pratchettian humour and flair.
	The Wind Singer (Wind on Fire Trilogy) by William Nicholson Buy used from: £0.01 Likeable characters and good plot make this an enjoyable triology which gets better throughout the three books.
	City of Masks (Stravaganza) by Mary Hoffman Buy used from: £0.01 Exciting, evocative and emotional. First in a very strong triology.
	The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger Buy new: £4.91 / Used from: £0.80 Compulsary reading for angsty teenagers. The realisation you are not alone will be a great comfort. It's a great read as well.
