In 2006, I read . . . (Part I)
The Joy Luck ClubThe Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
Buy new: £5.91 / Used from: £0.01
Strangely unengaging, with unsympathetic characters. Makes us women seem like a bunch of whiners.
Forever AmberForever Amber by Kathleen Winsor
Buy new: £7.66 / Used from: £3.35
Loved the section set during the Great Plague. Hated Amber. Perhaps that's why I couldn't relax and enjoy this read.
Catch-22Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £0.09
At last, a book I can get on board with. Funny and completely engrossing.
Portrait in SepiaPortrait in Sepia by Isabel Allende
Buy new: £5.69 / Used from: £0.01
Okay, but a big disappointment after 'House of Spirits'. Read that instead. It's wonderful.
Mansfield ParkMansfield Park by Jane Austen
Buy new: £4.48 / Used from: £0.01
Fantastic. My third favourite Austen. It's got a proper, grown-up heroine who's behaviour is utterly believable even if it isn't what you want it to be.
Jane Eyre (Penguin Classics)Jane Eyre (Penguin Classics) by Charlotte Brontë
Buy new: £5.22 / Used from: £0.85
What's not to love about 'Jane Eyre'?
EmmaEmma by Jane Austen
Buy new: £4.47 / Used from: £0.01
My second favourite Austen. Lighter in tone than 'Mansfield Park'. If you're one of those people who thinks Fanny Price is too passive, you'll be relieved to find that Emma Woodhouse is anything but.
I Capture the Castle (Vintage Classics)I Capture the Castle (Vintage Classics) by Dodie Smith
Buy new: £5.97 / Used from: £0.14
Quirky is the word that springs to mind. And that's a good thing.
PersuasionPersuasion by Jane Austen
Buy new: £3.57 / Used from: £0.01
A re-read. Used to be my second favourite Jane Austen but I'm now demoting it to least favourite. It's still a fantastic read though.
A Room with a View (Penguin Classics)A Room with a View (Penguin Classics) by E.M. Forster
Buy new: £5.03 / Used from: £2.14
Probably the one to start with if you're going to read an E M Forster. Accessible, enjoyable and never trivial.
Flashman (The Flashman Papers)Flashman (The Flashman Papers) by George MacDonald Fraser
Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £0.01
The first flashman novel. I really wanted to like it. But I didn't find it funny and found myself frequently bored.
Sense and Sensibility: A Classic RomanceSense and Sensibility: A Classic Romance by Jane Austen
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £0.01
Continuing my quest to re-read all of Jane Austen. How much did I like it? Less than 'Mansfield Park' but more than 'Northanger Abbey'.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar [Board Book]The Very Hungry Caterpillar [Board Book] by Eric Carle
Buy new: £2.96 / Used from: £0.01
I've read this out loud to my son about two hundred times over the last two years, so it deserves to be included.
Lady Chatterley's Lover (Wordsworth Classics)Lady Chatterley's Lover (Wordsworth Classics) by D.H. Lawrence
Buy new: £1.99 / Used from: £0.01
Wonderful. About so much more than sex. One of the best books I've read all year.
The Remains of the DayThe Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
Buy new: £4.77 / Used from: £0.79
The relationship between Stevens and Miss Kenton is beautifully imagined but the quality of your reading experience is assured as much by the ethical questions the book poses.
The Time Traveler's WifeThe Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Buy new: £3.83 / Used from: £0.75
Time for a change of pace. What a page-turner. Thoroughly enjoyable.
The Act of Marriage: The Beauty of Sexual LoveThe Act of Marriage: The Beauty of Sexual Love by Tim F. LaHaye
Buy new: £4.34 / Used from: £2.04
At last, some non-fiction. Unless you're a committed Christian, this might not be your bag. I found it very useful though.
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (Penguin Popular Classics)The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (Penguin Popular Classics) by Anne Bronte
Buy new: £2.25 / Used from: £0.01
About the death of a marriage - not that common a topic in nineteenth century literature but one that Anne Bronte handles in masterly fashion.
The House of the SpiritsThe House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende
Buy new: £6.48 / Used from: £0.01
I love this so much that I offered to re-read it out-loud to my husband. It should be enough to send you out scouring your local library for more magical realist novels.
The Lovely BonesThe Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
Buy new: £4.12 / Used from: £0.01
I didn't like this and could barely make myself finish it. But I do seem to be in the minority.
Northanger AbbeyNorthanger Abbey by Jane Austen
Buy new: £4.00 / Used from: £0.01
After 'The Lovely Bones' left me unsatisfied, I went back to Austen. She never lets me down.
Wuthering Heights (Pocket Penguin Classics)Wuthering Heights (Pocket Penguin Classics) by Emily Brontë
Buy new: £3.80 / Used from: £0.93
Another re-read. My copy is falling apart but, if you're a first-timer, don't be put off by Mr Lockwood. He doesn't hang about for long and everyone else is much more interesting.
Villette (Wordsworth Classics)Villette (Wordsworth Classics) by Charlotte Bronte
Buy new: £1.99 / Used from: £0.01
I know it's a classic and very highly regarded but I was so bored. I plodded through till the bitter end and wished I hadn't bothered. Again, I'm in the minority on this one.
The Boleyn InheritanceThe Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory
Buy new: £15.29 / Used from: £0.01
Cue another change of pace. What a relief. Not the best Gregory I've ever read, but still very enjoyable.
In Cold Blood : A True Account of a Multiple Murder and Its Consequences (Penguin Modern Classics)In Cold Blood : A True Account of a Multiple Murder and Its Consequences (Penguin Modern Classics) by Truman Capote
Buy new: £5.74 / Used from: £3.57
I don't read much crime, but this is excellent. A fast-paced, exciting narrative that throws up lots of those ethical questions that I love so much.
