The Best Books I Read in 2008
The Parent's Survival HandbookThe Parent's Survival Handbook by Rohan Candappa
Buy used from: £0.01
Rohan's books are always funny. He has a great way of twisting what goes on in the world and coming up with something fantastic!
Slow Coast Home: 5,000 Miles Around the Shores of England and WalesSlow Coast Home: 5,000 Miles Around the Shores of England and Wales by Josie Dew
Buy new: £7.69 / Used from: £0.01
An ideal combination of getting Josie's opinion on places that I know (and, occasionally, love) and her charming and chatty writing style
Bobby Fischer Goes to WarBobby Fischer Goes to War by David Edmonds
Buy new: £5.55 / Used from: £0.01
An excellent, very readable book telling the story of Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky's world championship match. You don't need to know a single thing about chess to read this.
Vintage StuffVintage Stuff by Tom Sharpe
Buy used from: £0.01
Possibly the best Tom Sharpe farce I've read. Most of his books involve making the upper class and those in authority appear ridiculous, and this one is brilliant at doing that.
In the Company of Cheerful Ladies (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency)In the Company of Cheerful Ladies (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency) by Alexander McCall Smith
Buy new: £4.99 / Used from: £0.01
At times I thought the author was being patronising to Botswanans, painting them all as simple people, but the story is so lovely that you can live with those and rejoice in the loveliness of the book
31 Dream Street31 Dream Street by Lisa Jewell
Buy new: £4.46 / Used from: £0.01
I really enjoyed this, it was a page-turner, sweet and lovely. Yes, you know exactly what it is you're going to get, but as chick-lit/women's fiction goes, it's a superb example of the genre.
Do You Remember the First Time?Do You Remember the First Time? by Jenny Colgan
Buy used from: £0.01
A combination of Life on Mars, Big and Quantum Leap. It was quirky enough to be nowhere near traditional chick-lit whilst keeping some of the themes you get in other books of this genre.
Me and Mickie JamesMe and Mickie James by Drew Gummerson
Buy new: £7.18 / Used from: £0.01
Madcap and zany - in the good sense, not the 'ironic' sense. Witty, clever and warm. I really liked the two lead characters, they were very well written.
Q and A (filmed as Slumdog Millionaire)Q and A (filmed as Slumdog Millionaire) by Vikas Swarup
Buy new: £4.79 / Used from: £0.01
A real page turner. An interesting writing style for a wonderful story of how life can throw you a curve ball, for a good reason.
My Year of MeatMy Year of Meat by Ruth L. Ozeki
Buy used from: £0.01
A fictional 'Fast Food Nation'. An absolutely stunning book. The story is beautifully written. How the lives of the two main characters develop is incredibly well written.
