Synopsis
First there was THE SEVEN SAMURAI, then THE THREE AMIGOS, and now the one and only Bruce Campbell, perhaps the most dashing savior of small towns the silver screen has ever put forth. MY NAME IS BRUCE follows our hero, B-movie icon Bruce Campbell, as he rescues the small mining town of Gold Lick from the rampaging Guan Di, a Chinese god of war and protectorate of bean curd (no kidding), seeking revenge for the death of 100 Chinese miners in the town a century before.
Customer Reviews
So bad it's good!
When a Chinese god of war is unleashed in the small town of Gold Lick, the residents kidnap B-movie legend Bruce Campbell to save the day. Only Bruce thinks that this is all a film and that the residents are actors and the war god is fake.
This film is not your standard comedy/horror at all and I really can't imagine anyone who hasn't heard of Bruce Campbell will enjoy it in the slightest. If you are a fan though, this is great! The acting is bad, the script is bad, the special effects are bad...everything you'd expect from a Bruce Campbell film really. But it is all done in a tongue-in-cheek fashion and doesn't take itself seriously at all.
I really admire Bruce for basically looking at his career and laughing at it and making a film out of it - what a great idea! This the king of all B-Movies but is definitely not for everyone. If Evil Dead, Bubba Ho-Tep and The Man with the Screaming Brain are familiar film names to you, you will more than likely enjoy this. If not, I'd recommend watching something else as this is strictly for Bruce fans' enjoyment.
Fodder for Fans
The people of a backwards town, 75 miles from the middle of anywhere, kidnap Bruce Cambell (they spell his name wrong on the welcome banner!) having been talked into believing this hapless B-movie actor is the one to save them from a risen vengeful Chinese demon who's hell-bent on murdering all the descendents of the folk that entombed him - by one of their own (the one who accidentally released him), who also just happens to be BC's biggest fan.
BC thinks it's part of a movie set-up, an elaborate birthday surprise from his agent... but the townsfolk think he's their saviour!
Up to this point all's well and good, but the downside quickly develops; instead of being humorous, irreverent or even self-effacing the Bruce Campbell playing Bruce Campbell character is just too offensive; shallow and egotistical.
He reprieves his Ash Williams role from The Evil Dead but for good measure, or just laziness, many of the jokes are resurrected too. There are times the script and acting is too embarrassing, and perhaps not intentionally so, and the 'embittered by life' attitude is a overplayed.
That said, there are a few genuinely funny lines, but when the humour comes this is more a movie that would make a person raise a smile rather than a laugh.
Final verdict: quite disappointing.
Gimme some sugar baby!
Excellent movie. Bruce Campbell has always been one to poke fun at himself and this is no exception. He still has the magic and the knack of delivering some killer lines such as "Kid, i've made a movie in Bulgaria so i'm ready for anything". The story is pretty straightforward as an ancient Chinese demon is released and goes on a killing spree. One of the locals is a huge Bruce Campbell fan thus they kidnap Campbell to aid them in their fight against the demon. Problem is, Bruce thinks this is all a movie/joke. The movie probably features the best use of a life size cardboard cut out ever! This movie provides plenty of laughs and it's good to see the man back to his best!
