Editorial Reviews
Proper Music
The Independent's obituary described George Melly with the headline, 'Flamboyant Oscar Wilde of English Jazz, incisive critic and memorist of disarming candour'. Melly attended his first recording session in 1950 as part of Mick Mulligan's Magnolia Jazz Band. He made his last recording accompanied by Digby Fairweather's Half Dozen and Farewell Blues is it.
When George knew he was dying he wanted to make one more album. Typically he had refused treatment for his cancer so that he could go on performing for as long as possible. This CD finds George having a good time and singing the songs with relish. His sense of fun and irreverence shines through. With a recording career spanning 57 years this is a very fitting tribute to one of the great characters of British Jazz.
