A really good book with poor maps and bad colour plates
This is probably the first book available about the Great Siege of Gibraltar between 1779 and 1783 and it is a very good one. Even if the siege itself was much less dramatic that its name and its duration could let believe, it is still a very interesting reading and I enjoyed it mightily. I am however unable to give it five stars, because of maps and colour plates.
First the maps - they are poorly made, lack in details and do not show well the situation during the Great Siege. Valuable place is wasted on maps of Mediterranean on which there are only few events marked, some of no relevance for the topic of the book.
There are only two colour plates and they are so superficial and poorly made that I wonder how the editors could have accepted them - this is clearly one more proof of declining quality in Osprey editing. Chasing the fast buck, the quality is jettisoned and it is a pity. This is particularly regrettable for the most dramatic event of the siege, the attack of the French and Spanish floating batteries - a artistically full of potential event is illustrated in a way that a high school art student could make in an afternoon.
