A great virtual horse game
I saw this game on the internet and decided to get it straight away. I've always been a little disappointed with virtual horse games, but with this one I am very happy with. The graphics are amazing, and much better than I expected, especially from a DS point of view. There are realistic looking terrains ranging from sea, sand and grass to hillside cliffs and slow moving streams and you come across varied wildlife when you go trail riding with your horse. Although some of the animals in this don't look at all exceptional most are quite realistic and are very cute when they scurry across your path.
You have a choice of 6 horse breeds (connemera, Haflinger, Mustang, Hokkaido, Camargue and Fjord) and the option of creating your own perfect horse with many different colours and markings that can make your horse unique. They also prefer a certain type of food, but I shall not go into that.
You can go around the trails taking photos of the different wildlife you see, which can earn you money and accessories such as blankets, saddles, horseshoes and hair accessories which can then be used on your horse to raise their style meter. You earn most of your money from your chores (three things you have to do like wash your horse, feed them, go to the shop and so on) and from completing tasks on a certain trail that changes each day. Although the tasks are varied and are quite exciting to do, it doesn't earn you much, neither does your chores and getting enough money to buy a new horse (which is normally around 200) or buying care items and new style items.
You can take your horse to the races, which only increases their speed meter, yet it makes no difference on trails, since on the trails there is only a trot and a gallop. I have not finished all the races yet, but I have not earned any money from the races I have finished already, so the only reason to do this really is to raise your horse's speed meter.
But, I enjoy this game and you could easily get caught up in this game. The graphics, as I have said earlier are great and the horses actually move like horses, and react to you in a very realistic way (especially when you pet them) and this is something unique to this game. The little videos on this game that give you a little introduction to the various areas are cute as well.
Fun, relaxing and ponytastic!!
To echo the other reviews you will be blown away by the graphics in this game the range of environments on trail rides is fabulous (piers, beaches, forests, swamps....the list goes on) Being on the look out for gates to new trails, animals ranging from wasps to deer to grizzly bears as well as items to accessorize your horse. There is also a daily trail quest to earn some extra money as well as photography prizes for each full set of three animals (24 sets of 3 in all) The sound on these trails is also worth a mention with altering sounds of the pony's hooves depending on terrain (bridges, water, dirt etc.) and today I was sitting in a park playing...you can scarcely differentiate between the bird noises from the ds and the ones in the (very real) trees!! If these trails were non-linear this game would be beyond brilliance.
Looking after your horse is a fun use of the stylus...for example to clean hooves you brush away the dirt and tap at the stones (and if you are lucky, stones and shells for rewards!) to remove them. If your pony has red bits indicating infection you can treat them...you can also see your VERY cool horseshoes if you have found special ones... Accesorizing is a part of the game i wasnt sure I would enjoy being 18 and not particularly girly but The wide range allows something for everyone and the custom quartermark and blanket although requiring some skill and dexterity are a fun way to while away the time (at the moment I have a fine spiraling flame drawn on my pony's rump) Customizing a pony to begin with is SO fun with MANY options and I like to create new varieties even when I don't have the money to actually buy that pony into my stables.
Anyway, its a seriously fun virtual pet game for the DS and the great graphics and amazing responsiveness of the pony make you really feel like you have your own pony(s) in your pocket and the daily tasks and chores encourage you to switch on everyday. I'd like it if there were more 'gameplay' elements making it feel as though the game had more of an ultimate objective (apart from retirement and career choices for your pony), the game is very easy but then it fits the type of game it is...only small things and if you like horses, really not hard to ignore among the otherwise great elements of this game.
Giddy Up! This game rocks!
This game is great fun and there is loads to do. Having played Animal Crossing and Nintendogs to death I was keen for something new for my DS. Pony Friends has it all - you can custom design up to 3 ponies, choosing the colour and pattern of the coat, legs, face markings, tail and mane. Or you can buy one of 6 real life breeds. You can accessories your pony with different saddles, blankets, horse shoes, bridles and quatermarks (patterns on its rump) or you can design your own - just like in Animal Crossing. Once your pony is saddled up you can go trail riding. There are loads of trails (really pretty for a DS title)to unlock in a variety of environments, but you need to get your pony fit enough to do the longer ones. On the trail rides you have to take picture of wildlife that you see and there are rewards for photographing sets of animals. You can enter races to get your pony fit, you have to cheers your pony on into the microphone and it goes fast or slow depending on the volume of your voice. In the field you build up a releationship with your pony (like Nintendogs) by stroking it till hearts appear and feeding it special treats.
There are loads of things to try and collect and style, speed and fitness goals for each pony that you need to spend time building up.
This game will keep you entertained for hours on end!
