Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com
Extreme's best recording displays this band's considerable talents to their best advantage, particularly those of guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and vocalist Gary Cherone (as of this writing, sounding a lot like Sammy Hagar as the current singer for Van Halen). The album's success has mainly been due to the soft-spoken hits "More Than Words" and "Hole Hearted," but there's plenty to like on this album, which explores the very general theme of love in a cynical world. Extreme had a lot on their minds when they recorded Pornograffitti, as evidenced by the songs "Decadence Dance," "When I'm President," and "Money (In God We Trust)." Aside from the aforementioned ballads and the loungey "When I First Kissed You," this album rocks out, examining serious themes with considerable humor, which prevents Extreme from ever sounding preachy or condescending. --Genevieve Williams

CD Description
Extreme's self-titled 1989 debut made the Boston quartet quite a "buzz band" in the hard rock underground, but it wasn't until their sophomore release one year later, PORNOGRAFFITI, that the band scored their breakthrough hit. In the spring of '91, the lovely acoustic ballad "More than Words" was released as a single, and instantly became a smash hit (nearly a year after PORNOGRAFFITI was first released). And while they scored another hit with the similarly styled "Hole Hearted", Extreme's new pop fans must have been surprised when they heard the rest of the album, which was comprised mostly of hard rock/heavy metal tunes.
The album was also the band's first stab at writing a concept album--it dealt with the media's subtle yet constant use of sex in advertising and it's effect on the public. If you're in the mood for rock with a progressive edge and loaded with six-string wizardry (courtesy of Nuno Bettencourt), just check out "Decadence Dance", "When I'm President", "Get the Funk Out", It('s A Monster)", "He Man Woman Hater", and the title track.

Funk on!5
I love this CD. It is a rock album, but with influences from fnk to jazz to blues to soul........ what a band.

Nuno is a world class guitarist, and plays some scary stuff - he does a lot of tapping, but in an original way.

The songs are all good, and don't forget, More Than Words topped the charts the world over. But songs like Get The Funk Out, Decadence Dance, Suzi Wants.... and the title track are the reason so many people love the record, and it should be part of every happy home.

A Quite Brilliant Guitarists Album5
There is no doubt that this album, being the band's 2nd studio release, is a modern day classic in rock/metal. The band's debut album was largely unknown, at least in the Uk, and it was this second far superior record which brought the band well-deserved fame and fortune.
From a guitarist's perspective, I have to say this is one of my all-time favourite albums. Nuno provides us all with a humbling demonstration of fast, intricate and incredibly inventive playing. His tone, helped by the crystal clear production, is also superb.
This is, however, an album not just about great guitar riffs. The band demonstrate the rock songwriting art with great aplomb. There are so many infectious tunes on this and each member of the band contributes to the overall effect, particularly Gary Cherone who gives his best vocal performance for Extreme.
This is without question one of the great rock/metal records of the 90s and any self-respecting music fan should own a copy.

Nuno... woah.4
I first heard extreme off a crackly casette from my guitar tutor next door. I came away with that cassette and he hasn't had it back since! More than words, though some will be annoyed at me mentioning it over the rest of the album, is the one that stands out to you on hearing it first of all, and is beautiful. Nuno Bettencourt ..... he either inspires you to continue with guitar or makes you feel it's all futile! he's unbelievable. Maybe not because he tries out new stuff ALL THE TIME, but just because he has a differnet dynamic, a different passion to his playing. He definately catches your ear!!
And, Gary Cherone explores a completely different sound in his voice, an instrument in its own right, throughout this album. More than Words is also a notable song on this point - beautiful.
