Product Description

The last millennium has not been a great success. We have advanced in science and technology, but not much in human behaviour. Is it possible that this has been due to poor thinking? Edward de Bono maintains that the thinking of the last millennium has been concerned with WHAT IS. This is the thinking of analysis, criticism and argument. What we have not sufficiently developed is the thinking concerned with WHAT CAN BE. This is thinking that is creative and constructive, and which seeks to solve conflicts and problems by designing a way forward. The emphasis of his proposed new thinking is on design and not judgement.

Customer Reviews

Thought provoking stuff.4
Flicking through the books pages you could be fooled into thinking that it's about the human reproductive system. There are many diagrams of these little tadpole things, which are used to express his various ideas. Edward de Bono attacks the idea that Western critical thinking should be regarded as the height of intelligence. He also argues quite convincingly that ideas to do with design and possibility have as much value as critical faculties.
It is an interesting, well-rounded book and not as heavy as you might think. However if you have some of his other stuff (Thinking Course, Six Thinking Hats) you may find that NTFTNM goes over much the same ground. Everyone should read at least one of Edward de Bono's books and this one is a great place to start.

Insightful and thought provoking5
I bought this book on a whim after having see the man himself on a TV appearance, he struck me as a man of great wisdom who had the power to focus all the confusion into a clear thought and using this as a start point, develop it to all the possible conclusions.

The beauty of the book is that it is written just as the man thinks. It's structure is far from rigid using a collection of related paragraphs to discuss and offer insight on the subject of active thought. When he identifies a problem, you have difficulty understanding how come no one has mentioned it before, how we have continued to make such errors again and again.

Reading this book will make you consider you thought patterns and in my case, the approach I take to my work. It is so easy to read that you can't help but gain insight and a genuine respect for the man himself.
