Loel Collins draws on his experience to help the readers learn to roll a kayak or improve the roll they already have. The approach is to illustrate the ideas with clear photo sequences, keeping the text to a minimum. Rolling is learnt by working through a sequence of exercises to allow the learner to 'feel' what is required. Once the initial sequences have been learnt, problems are identified and solved. The learners are then provided with exercises to prepare them for the challenges involved in rolling in rough water and given advice on how to cope when they get there. For those who wish to improve an unreliable roll, a flow chart helps them to plan a learning sequence and choose the appropriate exercises. Although aimed at kayakers, the book is also a mine of useful tools for the coach looking for tools that they can use when teaching rolling.

Superficial but some useful and unique tips - especially for coaches
This is similar in format to other titles from Pesda Press, lots of pictures but very little text to support them. There is a really superficial feel to this book.
What I do like is Collins' principle of not becoming too reliant on practice equipment; kayakers should be prepared to roll without goggles or nose-clips. To this end there are some really useful exercises presented in this book that I haven't seen elsewhere.
No book or DVD can train you into how a roll should *feel*; that can only be gained through experience. However, there is a lot more detail available elsewhere.
When I was learning to roll, I didn't find this book to be very useful. Other titles were far better with introducing different techniques as well as helping me understand how rolling works, such as the "Kayak Roll" DVD, EJ's "Rolling and Bracing" DVD, as well as The Bombproof Roll and Beyond book.
Since I have begun teaching rolling, this book has become far more useful; the individual exercises, which break down the complexity of the muscle memory required into individual components, are really, really useful. This book is an excellent coaching resource.
