Amazon.co.uk Review
Lawrence Fishburne and Sam Neill head up a strong cast as the reluctant leaders of a rescue mission sent to find out just what in the hell (literally) happened to the crew of a long-vanished experimental spacecraft in this dark and thundering descent of a horror film. Although this extremely stylish haunted spaceship movie may be guilty of ripping off half a dozen better films (including Don't Look Now, Hellraiser, and especially Andrei Tarkovsky's great Solaris), it's difficult to deny the gothic razorblade effectiveness of the end result. Not a "fun" film by any stretch of the imagination, but a thrillingly ruthless shocker that may leave more susceptible viewers in need of a long shower and a high-voltage night-light. For the full effect, watch it with all the lights off and the volume cranked up to 11. --Andrew Wright
Synopsis
In this eerie science-fiction ghost story, an astrophysicist (Sam Neill), haunted by the memory of his wife's suicide, joins a rescue mission to salvage his life's work: the Event Horizon, a prototype spacecraft capable of faster-than-light travel that has been missing for seven years. Their arrival triggers contact with something beyond human experience--and more dangerous than ever imaginable. Similar in plot to Andrei Tarkovsky's eponymous screen adaptation of Stanislaw Lem's science-fiction novel Solaris, Event Horizon provides some truly potent moments in its often potent combination of horror and sci-fi.

Hell in space never looked so good
anybody who has played the video game Dead Space will probably get a sense of deja vu when watching this film. And that's hardly surprising giving director Paul 'resident evil' Andersons debut was a massive influence for the game. The story follows a fate of a top secret space vessel, the Event Horizon, which mysteriously disappeared. When it suddenly re-emerges 7 years later it's up to a rescue crew led by Lawrence Fishbourne (in usual top form) to find out what happened joined by the ships creator (horror regular Sam Neill) it isn't long before the team realise all is not well. You see the Event Horizon uses black hole technology to transport anywhere instantaneously and it's quite literally been to Hell and back, and it's not long before it takes it's rage out on the newcomers. Had it not been for excellent visuals and some heavyweight actors it may have been a generic haunted house in space film, but as it is it's certainly worth a look. The picture is a mixed bag with grain where there shouldn't be but when it is good it gives credit to the excellent visuals. Sound is disappointing though. Not terrible, but not nearly enough oomph, with the speakers mumbling when they should be screeching out the horrors, removing the obligatory 'jump out of your seat' moments. Compared to it's original DVD release however it does have a few decent extras including trailers deleted scenes, storyboard, making of and commentary, just a shame it has the most boring menu screen yet seen on Blu Ray. Still overall it's a decent effort just about worth the few quid it costs
Must buy
