Batter then my Tomtom 920 In Getting a Signal Inside!!!
Had Tomtom software installed on my Nokia N95 8GB Mobile Phone needed a GPS Receiver N95 has a Internal GPS but it is totally RUBBISH saw this one was nice and small just what I needed.
Well it is easy as 1,2,3 My N95 found it straight VIA Bluetooth but what really Supraised me was that it cached a SIGNAL INSIDE MY HOUSE YES INSIDE!!! so I turned everything off to try again this time I got my Tomtom 920 out and it could not find a signal inside BUT did manage to find it after 3 minutes just showing 1 BAR then I opened the Tomtom on my Nokia N95 & BOY I was SHOCKED got a signal in 20 seconds and showing 3 BARS This Must be something to do with the CHIPSET thats inside this "GPS 2000 FREEDOM" uses a Chipset called MTK while the one in Tomtom is Star Sirf but MTK RULEZZZZZZZZZZ Buy it you wount be dispointed this GPS will not let you down it is so small yet so POWERFUL in getting a lock on satellites.
Works well with Google Earth 5.0 GPS realtime tracking
Bought this and initially thought I'd made a big mistake as I hadn't done much research before buying and found my mobile phone while blue tooth enabled would not support GPS and there seemed to be a lack of GPS software available to download and try before buying. I had hoped to use Google Maps but found Google Maps only supports GPS on Windows Mobile, not XP; no good to me as use a Samsung NC10 netbook when mobile that uses Windows XP. Thought I'd try Google Earth and with the version of Google Earth I had GPS support required a paid subscription, so would have had to pay first and it may not work. Luckily there was a higher version of Google Earth and when I ugraded to 5.0 (beta) I found GPS was now available without a paid subscription. Paired my GPS with my netbook, turned on the device so it was discoverable, started Google Earth, went to tools, selected GPS, selected Realtime tab, ticked the NMEA option and auto-track and google maps quickly zoomed into my location placing a blue dot exactly where my house is. It works perfectly indoors and if not in use it goes into sleep mode to save energy.
My only reason for giving four stars and not five is because it shouldn't be this difficult to find out which software supports the device. Also it seems to have a fixed baud rate of 115,200 that means it does not work with software that is limited to lower baud rates.
But it now works perfectly on a Samsung NC10 running Google Earth 5.0.
Great little gizmo, only two tiny issues
Very useful little gadget - bluetooth setup with my Nokia E51 was very straightforward and it works fine with Nokia Maps, Google Maps, TrackMyJourney and though I haven't tested it yet with Sports Tracker I am sure it will work fine(!). Reception is extremely good - sitting on the table in my dining room it shows my location precisely in Google Maps satellite view - a bit spooky. Also no problems with dropping fix when using it in the car hanging from my keyring in the ignition. Charge seems to last a good long time, and the whole thing is small enough to just add onto my keyring. So all up I am very pleased. Only two small comments on things that would make this perfect if corrected. First, the plasticised matt black paint covering peels off pretty easily - it doesn't really matter that much as there is shiny black plastic underneath, but it means that the indicator lights just show through as plain coloured LED's without the symbols (which are kind of stencilled into the plasticised paint coating so they disappear when it's rubbed off). And the little key ring attachment spigot, whilst very robust, good quality etc, is really quite fiddly to operate when you want to attach or detach to/from your keyring - it tends to just slip and rotate rather than open easily. Hence 4 stars rather than 5, but as long as these things don't bother you, I'd say get one! These are very small gripes about what is I think overall an excellent product.
