Bargain well performing unit, Works with many Free Maps4
I was in two minds if I needed the Oregon200 or another better model. After buying the 200 due to lower price, I am now satisfied it is good value for money and the extra cost for the higher models is unneccessary. The 300 and 400 have electronic compass and barometric pressure measurement of altitude. It is worth noting that the 200 does measure altitude by satelite, accurate enough for most people, it also has an electronic compass, also showing a bearing off your chosen course. The only difference-you have to be moving for it to sense your direction you are facing (little hardship really)

There are several reviews stating they only accept Garmin maps which are expensive. I can say this is utter nonsense. There are many maps available FREE on the internet for most countries in the world compatible with the Garmin. I would say there are more than for any other make. Within a day I had downloaded the full UK track and trail with landscape features, all Australia, and Poland. Just copy them to your memory card and hey-presto it is done.

Just Google 'Mapsntrails' or 'talkytoasteruk' for a wide selection of maps.

I recently used my oregon 200 to navigate most of the lake district off-road, over several days and nights. After easily downloading the route to the garmin, I was easily able to find my way round following the course, even in total darkness with no other navigational aids.

If you dont need barometric pressure measurement, and can do without a compass when you are static, then the 200 is all you need.

    Other Maps Can Be Used...4
Don't believe the review that states that other maps can't be used, they can. There are a number of mapping options to overcome the limited basemap (the same problem occurs on most handheld GPSrs).

    The solutions include:

    1. Topo GB from Garmin (rather expensive and limited)
    2. Garmin Discoverer range of SD/MicroSD cards (these are full OS maps in 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 of national parks and trails). These are not cheap, but excellent.
    3. FREE maps using data from the OpenStreetMap project. These are available in Garmin IMG format and free. (Just Google for "OSM Map On Garmin Download"). The beauty of these are that they are FREE, available for many countries and are constantly improving.

As to the Oregon 200, it is a great little unit for hiking, cycling and geocaching. You can even use it a a basic in-car sat-nav.

I have been using this for about 4 months now and I upgraded from a Legend Hcx. Great unit for paperless geocaching, no printouts required all the hints and cache decriptions can be placed on the Oregon and are available when you need them whilst out caching.

The touchscreen is accurate and easy to use, but I would suggest you use a screen protector to stop any scratches to the screen.

Unless you need the extra features offered in the Orgeon 300 or later models, then buy this and save your money for something else.

    Great navigation5
I love that machine. Excellent handling with the touch screen and its easy to learn how to handle it.
Unfortunately, the topo maps are to much expensive but luckily there are not fundamental to use the garmin.
It supportetd me on my geocaching activities very well. The navigation is quick and very exact so it`s easy to find the cachs (+/- 3m).
And by the way, it inculdes more or less the same functionalities as the 300 Series but it`s much cheaper.
