Customer Reviews

Disappointing1
Used this while exploring Cyprus by car and it was very poor regarding opening times and costs especially outside of the main tourist towns. Spent most of a day going to little villages up in the mountains to look at frescos only to find that ALL 3 of the openingtimes/days in the guide were wrong and the churches in queston were closed. As were some of the tavernas and as it was the middle of nowhere there wasn't any other place to eat. Very frustrating. This is supposed to be up to date but clearly isn't. Was ok for restaurants in places like Paphos but you hardly need a guide book for that.

Know your destination5
If you want to find out as much as possible before you travel and need a reference book when you are there this guide is essential reading and bang up to date

Doesn't sell Cyprus1
After reading this, if hadn't booked flights already, wouldn't have gone. The author is billed as having made 'numerous visits' to Cyprus, but sounds as though it was under sufferance, as he had few if anything good to say about the island, and those positives he did point out were tempered almost immediately by negatives. Someone who truly loved the island would not have portrayed it as he did. Warts and all guides are fine, but this was just negative and depressing to read when planning a holiday.

Examples:
- Kyrenia, Cyprus's 'most attractive coastal town' is in the next breath 'a vast building site' away from the old town
- Pafos has a 'fairly pleasant provincial capital' but upper town is 'in danger of losing its separate identity, as ready-mix concrete lorries and their medium-rise offspring steadily fill in the spaces'
His focus on the negatives does nothing for the island. Can only hope when they update this guide, they get someone in the same vein as Lawrence Durrell, whose travel book Bitter Lemons of Cyprus comes across as being written by a man who loves the island.
