Editorial Reviews
From the Publisher
Chapter 1, Basic Concepts, combines the first two chapters of the previous edition and streamlines some key terminology and graphics (replaces "deductively sound" with "sound" and "inductively sound" with "cogent"). Argument forms and counterexamples follow the discussion of validity/invalidity.
Exercises are strategically expanded throughout, particularly in the chapters on fallacies and predicate logic. Significant attention is paid to variation and level of difficulty; for example, more challenging exercises are added to chapters 7, 8, and 9.
Categorical logic is now covered in two chapters (Chapters 5 and 6), with many topics and pedagogical improvements added. Full coverage of Aristotelian logic is provided.
Chapter 4, "Informal Fallacies," now classifies fallacies using three categories for ease of understanding. A discussion of the fallacy of "complex question" is added. Fallacies relating to induction are now covered after the positive account of induction in Chapter 10.
Symbolic logic is presented clearly and precisely with numerous English arguments for exercises. POL provides enough material for a course focusing solely on modern symbolic logic.
Adopters praise POL for its focus on the relation between logical principles and arguments in ordinary language; the examples and exercises illustrate the power of logic as a tool for formulating problems and issues in revealing way.
The highly praised interactive Web tutor allows student to do truth tables, Venn Diagrams and symbolic logic exercises on-line, as well as to complete quizzes that can be submitted for a grade.
