Great book
I bought the hardcover version just before it went out of print, but before the 1999 version came out. I haven't seen the new one, but this one is fabulous. It's fun to read and very informative. I've been living in my house for 8 years - and only this week changed the dryer vent hose (it never occurred to me... ... and leaving it uncleaned was a FIRE HAZARD!). I also learned that the carpenter bees attacking my house are a nuisance and need attention, but not necessarily something to panic over. Wish I'd had something like this a LONG time ago. Great book.
This book saved me $10,000
Not only did I enjoy every page of this book, it literally saved me $10,000. Last winter, we experienced water leaking down our walls (we're talking lots of water) in two bedrooms -- both were outside walls. We thought our roof was leaking from the snow outside and had resigned ourselves to having to replace the roof (a $10,000 project, we were told by a local roofing company) this summer. In the meantime, I found The Virgin Homeowner. . .when I got to the chapter that talked about ice dams, I realized that was exactly my problem -- and guess what? We didn't need a new roof after all. The problem is fixed and everything is fine. I wish I had this book years ago. It's full of great information, but it's also funny and a pleasure to read. I now give it as housewarming gifts to all my friends and recommend it to everyone!
