A definitive tome
At last there is a book which ties together all of the complex arguments relating to the production of sound from the performance right through to the hifi listening experience. Philip makes clear his taste and reasons particular design strategies, and then includes discussions by those who prefer differing design strategies (few authors are so balanced!). There are clear design schemes for all of the elements of a studio, comprehensive diagrams and charts and a little maths for those that want it. Whether you are putting together a budget studio or a top of the range installation, this book is indispensible. It will even be of interrest to hifi buffs who wonder why recordings vary so much. Thanx Philip
This must be the Best Book on the market on the subject.
Recieved this book only a day or two ago, however, even after flicking through the book very quickly (before a studious study..no pun intended..lol) I can see, with out a doubt that this book is far superior in all ways to the other books I have read on the subject.
A few weeks a go I brought "How to Build A Small Budget Recording Studio From Scratch: With 12 Tested Designs (TAB/ Mastering Electronics Series)
by Michael Shea", which has its own merits, however, Recording Studio design is far more detailed, offers a better analysis of the subject matter and is organized in a logical manner that makes for a pleasurable and stressless read.
Philip Newell has writen this book in a very explanatory manner that is easy accessible to the layman and pro scientist alike.
This book may be £20 or so more expensive, however, after flicking through the pages, it is easy to see that this book is worth every penny.
I also like the fact that this book is only available in hard back, as, this is also logical, for if you are serious about studio design then you are going to want to read this book from cover to cover and keep handy during the construction process.
If the book was a light weight paper back, it is possible that you would end up ruining the book due to wear and tear and would have to replace your copy with another.
So, if you are thinking about designing a studio, even if you are like me, and are building a home studio. then this book is a must buy as it covers pretty much everything you can think of.
Buy this book!
The gold standard
I have applied most of the logic and ideas from this book into a working 'space for recording and mixing'. My second one, and much larger than the last. I say 'space' because this is about NON-environmental monitoring rooms, where you try to take the room out of what you hear, without getting a 'strange work place'.
Mr. Newell uses accessible language, even though by necessity the subject does call for using formulas and applying some scientific acumen. It is also not a 'just do this only' approach, but explains that your space will need different variations from another space. No cut and paste over-simplifications here.
Most of the current used types of control room design is covered, with reasoned explanations why these are not necessarily recommended any more.
A must read for anyone designing a room for tracking and mixing. If you are spending enough to build a 'GOOD' room, buy this book before you are too committed to anything beyond the concept of doing it.
