Everyone who cooks at home--those who cook twice a day and those who cook only occasionally--will find this a favorite cookbook to use again and again. It's great for both every-day meals and special dinners for company. In fact, you don't even need to know the difference between parsnips and parsley to enjoy this cookbook. These recipes are written for all of you--you'll have no trouble making them.
You'll appreciate the clear, easy-to-understand instructions and the hints that help save you time in the kitchen. The dozens of cook's tips on everything from fresh gingerroot to passion fruit will give you great information and answer questions you never even thought to ask.

We've sprinkled this edition liberally with fresh herbs, new more healthful and more convenient food products, and timesaving techniques. Many recipes include microwave versions. The "Breads and Breakfast Dishes" chapter even includes recipes for your bread machine.

One of the best things about this cookbook is that it is much more than a collection of recipes. It's a tool you can used to put together a diet that is right for you--low-calorie, low-fat, or both. Each recipe has been analyzed so you know just how many calories and grams of fat you'll have in one serving. We also give you the totals for carbohydrates, protein, saturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and fiber.
When you cook from this book, you'll be convinced that heart-healthy cooking really does use fantastic ingredients, look terrific, and taste delicious. This flagship cookbook of the American Heart Association is one every cook should have on the shelf.
Just to whet your appetite, here's a sample recipe. If you don't care for very spicy food, you might want to reduce the amount of crushed red pepper to 1/4 teaspoon. But for full flavor, use the whole teaspoon.
Steak Marinated in Beer and Green Onions
Serves 8
2 pounds boneless top sirloin steak, all visible fat removed
MARINADE
1 1/2 cups light beer (regular or nonalcoholic) (12 ounces)
4 green onions, minced
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
2 tablespoons dry sherry
1 tablespoon grated fresh gingerroot
1 tablespoon light soy sauce
2 medium cloves garlic, minced, or 1 teaspoon bottled minced garlic
1/4 to 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon acceptable vegetable oil
Dash of red hot-pepper oil
Put steak in an airtight plastic bag.
In a medium bowl, combine marinade ingredients. Pour over steak and turn to coat evenly. Seal and refrigerate for 1 to 24 hours, turning occasionally.
Preheat grill on medium-high.
Drain steak, then grill for 8 to 12 minutes per side, or until desired doneness.
