Product Description

Rhodesia, 1943. Paul Bryant hasn't been able to get back in a plane since a fatal bombing mission over Germany. So, instead, the Squadron Leader is flying a desk at a pilot training school at Kumalo Air Base. But one of his trainees has just been reported missing.

Pip Lovejoy, a volunteer policewoman, is also trying to suppress painful memories. When Felicity Langham, a high profile WAAF from the air base, is found raped and murdered, Pip and Bryant's paths cross. Suspicion immediately falls on the local black community, but Pip's investigations unearth a link between the Squadron Leader, the controversial heiress Catherine De Beers and the dead woman, which throws the case in a new, disturbing direction. What Pip thinks is a singular crime of passion soon escalates into a crisis that could change the course of the war.

Set in the vast landscape of Africa this is a spellbinding tale of love and war.

Customer Reviews

A fine piece of historical fiction5
The African Sky by Tony Parks is a well written and researched piece of historical fiction. The key areas which makes the novel an enjoyable read are its settings, stunning African scenery, powerful characters and well executed plot. My reading taste is well satisfied. I like way the author has added a thrilling element to the novel, with a strong historical setting. The historical chapter covered in the novel refers to how World War 2 affected African nations including Zimbawe (formerly known as Rhodesia) and neighbouring country South Africa.

The historical accuracy should never be doubted, as the author's illustration is perfect and very knowledgeable. The main areas touched upon include the Empire training scheme, the war-aircrafts, African tribal groups, Nazis spies and so on. Their are multi plots to the novel. The African Sky will prove to be interesting and intriguing piece of reading as you start reading the novel. Their are shocking events in history which are unpleasant to hear about. The characters representation are strong and accurate, with the miltary and police force providing a central role in the novel. I like the way the author vividily describe details about the African scenery. The location range from mountain, ranches and reserves.

The African Sky is a fine piece of historical fiction. It is a top class thriller.

Colonial crime in wartime5
Set in a little written about sector of WW2: the Empire Air Training Scheme, in colonial Rhodesia. Characters & plot redolent of Kenya's 'Happy Valley Set'. The feeling of repressed but hysterical emotion just below the surface of the very mannered, stiff upper lip culture that is so characteristic of the time. The plot kept me guessing till very near the end. Description of the RAF Base & aircraft & flying are as well researched as the rest of the descriptive writing. I liked this unusual setting for a crime novel. The characters are well drawn & are convincing. If you liked James Fox's 'White Mischief' I think you will find this book absorbing.

I AM a South African Expat5
This is a great adventure action story in the likes of Wilbur Smith.. well researched easy to read and difficult to put down ..subsequently read all of his books that Tony parks has published and regret that they are not readily available in UK. Not published here. I have other stories /novels written by Tony Park ..great reading! ..obtained in New Zealand book shops.
