room for improvement
A very nice book with detailed, well illustrated description of the intaglio printmaking process and its various techniques (not for the complete beginner I think). My main decision for buying the book was the idea of safety-first enviro friendly printmaking. I am used to the traditional way of printing and etching which is based on the use of rosin, bitumen etc.and found the acrylic etching system which this book promotes (Lascaux) quite difficult to use. It works but is not necessarily very user friendly ie.it is nearly impossible to remove the hard or soft resist(ground)once it has dried on the plate -on the other hand it will lift off the plate when left in the acid bath over some time.
The book reads well and the acrylic products it promotes sound like a safe and easy alternative to traditional printmaking.Unfortunately they are not that easy to use and the book does not deal with problems that might arise. It could have done with a chapter that deals with problem solving !
Intaglio: Acrylic Resist etching
Unlike the previous reviewer I have successfully used acrylic resist for a number of years, following practical courses, and I bought this book more in the interests of 'keeping up' with current practice. However I found the constantly reiterated health and safety rules extremely off-putting, to the extent where I felt if I followed their instructions to the letter I should need to don goggles and steel-capped boots every time I set foot in the studio!
Overall I felt the book to be more off-putting than encouraging to any potential printmaker, which is a pity.
