Great Advice For Tomato Growers
I got this book about ten years ago in a library sale in Borehamwood just outside London. It cost me 40 pence. I knew one day I would get a Greenhouse and would grow Tomatoes so I put it aside and didn't read it for just over ten years.
Well I pretty much forgot about the book until I purchased a Greenhouse this year and I dug it out of a box in the attic. It is a fantastic little book full of interesting and important information about tomato growing. There is even a section about choosing a Greenhouse (Floor to ceiling glass is best as Tomato plants need maximum light) but he also covers growing tomatoes out of doors.
If you are wondering if the information is dated well the answer is no. I have a few other more modern tomato growing books and there is nothing in them that is not covered in Ian Walls book. In fact Ian Walls covers most topics in greater detail. As an example consider "Watering" most books will tell you to taylor watering to mirror weather conditions i.e if it is hot and sunny apply more water if cool and cloudy then less water is needed. Ian Walls would agree with this but obviously has access to more detailed research and gives precise figures e.g. Very dull and cloudy most of the day 0.14 - 0.28 Litres per established plant, or very Sunny all day 1.5 - 1.8 litres per established plant.
If I could keep just one tomato growing book this is the one I would keep. Well worth a ten year wait!!!
