Series Limps to a Close
Yawn. Elizabeth marries Anthony and everyone lives improbably successfully ever after. Lynn Johnston's once fascinating strip staggers to its conclusion with the unrealistic wedding of Elizabeth and Anthony, the former high school boyfriend her parents threw her at for years, his first marriage being seen as a minor inconvenience by all characters as his straw-man wife was shown to be the epitome of evil for wanting a career instead of the traditional For Better or For Worse female destiny of a husband and two kids (one boy, one girl). All of the fictional town turns out to see John walk Elizabeth down the aisle in her grandmother's Second World War-era wedding dress, made of such miraculous fabric it can magically grow larger and larger with weekly alterations and fittings. Even the strip's creator admitted in interviews that she'd lost interest in the strip as early as 2001 and it showed as the storylines deteriorated to gag-a-day stories and truly awful puns, e.g.,"The feeling is mucilage". Bought -- with great regret and after much reluctance -- only to complete my collection, and in the knowledge that it will be the last product of Lynn Johnston's I will ever buy.
