One of Gorey's best
Edward Gorey had a strange and gloriously wicked imagination, and this is one of his finest efforts. This short tale tells of a bleak country mansion whose nameless inhabitants are visited one dark and windy night by a peculiar creature resembling a penguin in tennis shoes. Over a few pages Gorey manages to depict the steady collapse of reality that this family undergoes as the creature systematically overturns all expectations of etiquette, driving the family to despair and, finally, to abject resignation. Mysterious and chilling, a must for the dark child in us all.

This is a wonderful book and my favourite of the depressingly small number of Edward Gorey books I own.

The Guest is a penguin-like creature that turns up and causes surreal inconveniences for the inhabitants of a country house.
