A clever introduction, very informative, well illustrated
The book starts with a description of the development of garden styles in Japan through history, essential for further reading.Next follows an account of the early European explorers, especially on oriental plants. Their knowledge proved to be of utmost importance for the development of Japanese-style gardens throughout Europe at the beginning of the 20th century.The author explains in some detail that the early Japanese gardens in Europe are in fact an interpretation of gardens in Japan, as these early travellors experienced this completely new world.The book includes a list of places to visit in Great Britain, as well as a list of Japanese gardens in the U.S.A. Because the author proves to be very well informed on Japanese style gardens in Europe, it is a pity that gardens in France, Germany and the Netherlands are not included.Concise as it is, the booklet is extremely well and beautifully illustrated.
