In this book John Bird introduces electrical principles and technology through examples rather than theory - enabling students to develop a sound understanding of the principles needed by technicians in fields such as electrical engineering, electronics and telecommunications. However, the coverage of this new edition has been brought fully in line with the electrical and electronics units of the 2007 BTEC National specification. Excellent
I found this book very useful in my second year of electronics. There are worked examples and well worded descriptions. It doesnt go in to great depth on any subject but did give enough information for me to learn and understand easily. I recomend this book to anyone studying at the moment.

An adequate theoretical electronics text-book
There are a lot of electronics books that cover theory. Anyone interested in the subject needs at least one of these. As far as they go, Bird's is reasonably good. It covers just about everything required to get the most out of other, more pragmatic texts on the subject like 'The Art of Electronics' by Horowitz and Hill, for instance. However, after a while the 'exercise and answer' format does become laborious. But perhaps the biggest shorting is that transistors aren't given enough coverage.
