When I wrote The New Tattoo in 1994, the trend in body modification was just breaking into mainstream society, yet there were no mainstream books available to anyone interested in exploring the subject. As a journalist who had written about tattooing from a purely observational standpoint, I thought it would be timely - and interesting - to publish a longer book about it, treated as an art form and presented as such.
