In the 1950s and 1960s a group of young artists forged a fresh, representational art that made use of the Abstract Expressionists' spontaneous brushwork and brilliant colour to document the world. One of the leaders of this group, Wolf Kahn, specialized in landscape painting, which he has developed over the last 40 years. This book aims to demonstrate how his use of colour has placed him at the forefront of American representational art. The text presents an overview of Kahn's life and career - his childhood in Germany, his study at the Hans Hofman school, his early success as a latter-day Expressionist, and his ten years as a painter of austere, tonalist canvases, before he turned to the luminous landscapes that established his reputation. There is also an analytical essay by the painter and critic Louis Finkelstein which discusses the origins and value of Kahn's fusion of abstraction and representation.

A crisp -subtle joy to the inner heart of the self spirit
This is a unique book that is about painting and merges with pastels in a way few other artists have - a unique vision in so much as the sense of oneness in both Kahns inner and outer experiences\ I want to hold and read it over and over and enjoy getting lost in that place between the abstracted forms in and through nature and rural landscape as preserved places to walk into and reside as long as the reader chooses to do so-the images invite and provoke subtle and gentle "STIRRINGS" within Not a coffee table book thing-a unique gift of imagery by Kahn which allows us a path into the joy of personal experience of Kahns vision, heart and sensibilities-leaving the viewer to comprehend the magnitude of Kahns work on an individual and kind discovery of the Painters WORLD and our own WORLD-and nudges us to what the poet Frost said - "You Come Too" seem to eminate from this wonderful and brilliant sensitive work-with heart felt color this book of images touches me alongside the sensitive world where the Painters HEART and EYE merge here Truly a peaceful book of images for today and years of reflecting as both viewer and participant - I simplistically state - A wonder to see, experience and enjoy!Timeless...
