Customer Reviews
His second best book.
A change of setting, pace and mood from Miller's notorious 'Tropics' novels. 'Maroussi' is again semi-autobiographical, culled from the author's rich perception of experience, but more studied, thoughtful and spiritual in its content. This time we find Miller in Greece, discovering a world and a people that strike an almost religious chord with him as he steeps himself in the spiritual myths and history of the Ancient Greeks. First-time Miller readers looking for sex had better read the 'Tropics' or his other books instead - this is Miller grown older, grown wiser and sharing with us his world. It is not quite the exciting ride of said 'Tropics' (which you should read first) but it does have the usual offbeat Miller humour and observations, as well as an array of unforgettable characters typical of his work.
Serendipitous wonder.
Henry Miller takes us to quite an unusual experience and perception of Greece with the power of his words in this comparatively unknown book. This is no trivial travelogue, but it was a great pleasure to delve into his experience as if it was his reader's own!
A timeless snapshot!
I've read Miller's book countless times and always feel I'm traveling in Greece again. His writing and characters are larger than life (particularly Katsimbalis, the "Colossus" referenced in the title). The only book by Miller that I've really enjoyed, his passion for the subject makes up for any shortfalls. This is fine travel writing: personal philosophy, politics, and crystal clear word pictures of a unique land and people, delivered with respect and affection. Henry Miller's tribute to Greece - a vivid snapshot of a timeless culture!
